Best Management for Zoysia grass

Posted by Glenn On July - 17 - 2010

The care for Zoysia grass is somewhat similar to Floratam, but with a few differences. The main pest of this grass is the grub. It should be treated like Floratam, with a fertilizer application with insecticide two times per year in the spring and fall should keep them under control. There is no weed and feed that you can apply through fertilizer, but you can put out a fertilizer that keeps weeds from germinating. Any weeds you have you can use a variety of post emergent herbicides labeled for this grass. The most common and easiest zoysia I have found to take care of is Empire.

Fertilizer

Two times per year with an insecticide and one time with a pre emergent herbicide along with three other applications should keep lawn looking good. In the summer months use a good organic base fertilizer to reduce leaching out of the root zone.

Mowing

Zoysia’s can be mowed anywhere from ½ inch up to 2 ½ inches. Bagging again is not necessary and I have found that the lower you mow this grass the less thatch it seems to produce. It can be scalped or vertically mowed like Floratam, but you are better off slowly lowering the height over a few mowing’s instead of one shot like Floratam.

Disease

From time to time this grass can get disease mainly a leaf spot type that can easily be controlled with a properly labeled fungicide. If your nutrient program is in sound order and you keep thatch to a minimum you should not have many problems.
